Manchester 08/09/07
The UK’s very first Art Car Parade took place in Manchester on Saturday 8th September with 30 vehicles taking to the city streets. Created by artists from across the UK, the cars ranged from a pedal powered Lamborghini to a dinosaur dumper truck. Police estimated that some 30,000 people watched the parade as it made its way from Cathedral Gardens to its finale in Albert Square.
A total of £2,000 worth of prizes were awarded in the judging on Saturday afternoon, categories included:
1 – The Metamorphosis - the most original or ingenious transformation of a vehicle – won by Stephen Williams for his creation ‘Snake-Oil Sales Van‘
2 – The Makeover - the most original or impressive applied decoration or feature won by the Treatment Rooms for the ‘Tiki Love Truck‘.
3 – The Kyoto - best vehicle propelled by non-polluting fuel won by Jamie McCartney for ‘Carbon Miles‘ who converted the world’s most polluting car the Trabant into a pedal powered eco friendly vehicle.
4 – The People’s Choice – selected on the day by the viewing public won by Spencer Marsden and Jon Large for their musical milk float ‘Tone Float‘ (see picture below)
5 – Street legal - special prize for any vehicle that can be driven on the open road won by Seymore Hicks for ‘Orka‘ the Ford Ka converted into a Killer Whale.
Highly commended by the judges also were Car Jack and Minnie.
